I regularly leave my computers on for days and days at a time while capturing, encoding yada yada yada, with no apparent ill-effects. On Sunday nights I normally fire up my encoding machine, and set up scheduled tasks for the coming week to cap TV and then encode said caps to MPEG-2. All I have to do is make sure the receiver is on the right channel

I think that provided you have adequate ventilation around the back and sides of the tower and sufficient cooling fans inside the tower, there is no reason why your PC can't keep on keeping on for as long as you desire.

We have a 286 on DOS at work that has a 16 port phone card in it, and it has been running my bank's phone banking system for the past 6 years, 24/7/365.25, and has never been rebooted.
    If in doubt, Google it.

There's certainly many stories (both in this thread and out there) about pre-windows computers running for years on end with no software problems, and rarely the odd hardware problem. It just goes to show the impact Windows has had IMO.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Not just windows, but buggy drivers and people improperly flashing devices.

  10. You can leave the PC running on till the cows come home. But it is advisable to shutdown completely and reboot, say every 15 days - this gets rid of any runaway processes hanging about, clears virtual memory, etc. Also I would recommend shutting off the monitor when the PC is not being used; this will save some electricity bill. Monitors (especially CRT) account for 50% of the power drawn by the PC.

  11. Server class machines are designed to keep running forever but typical desktops are not.

I have no evidence to support it, but I would wager that the light weightness of laptop components might make them slightly less durable in usage terms. I know that they may have shock mounting and such, but I equate light weight with light duty. Do to the cost, I pamper my laptop and try to keep it out of service as much as possible. But hey, leave yours on 24/7/365 and get back to us if it fails
