Currently at Amazon.com, the 12th most popular DVD being sold today is only going for $13.99 brand new (as it was released in 1997). And, I'm wondering if Warner Brothers is taking note. If not, they may be blowing a golden opportunity to cash in on a hot news item and re-release the DVD with "new extras."

I'm referring to the 1976 film, "All The President's Men." But now, we know the identity of the informant, "Deep Throat." More importantly, the guy is still alive and "interviewable" ... as are Carl Bernstein, Bob Woodward, Ben Bradlee, and some of the Watergate defendants. Such a DVD re-release would be an historical coup for Warner Brothers and I think a lot of people would buy it ... just as a lot of people are buying it right now.

I would think by the time they got it together and released it that interest will have waned.

Currently, Google News garners 7,200 hits for the search term "Watergate" ... so it continues to be newsworthy. The movie itself doesn't have to change. Just drop the old box, add a 2nd DVD with interviews and other historical stuff on it, and repackage it for sale (at twice the current price). I think it will continue to be a reasonably hot topic for a few more months ... more than enough time to do a re-release and hype it while the hyping is hot. And, it might be hot for a bit longer, too. Some conservatives suggest that Felt should be brought up on charges ... of not following the FBI chain of command as he was supposed to do. That probably won't happen ... but some people are raising a stink about it now.

Thought he had Alzheimers or something along those lines and isn't he like 6 billion years old?

Didn't hear about him having Alzheimers or any other disease. But, the guy is in his 90s. Pat Buchanan is one of the conservatives saying charges should be brought against him. Even a CNN announcer (Novak?) said he should be taken to court. And (no surprise), all of the Watergate defendants seem to think so, too ... with the exception of John Dean. But it would be incredibly bad PR for Bush's new attorney general to drag a 90-something guy into court. What are they gonna do ... sentence him to life (grin)?

Frankly, I think Felt was very very wise. He knew the trail of deceit reached into the Nixon White House. But he didn't know if it also involved others in the administration (like his boss, Director Gray). He kept the secret, retired with full benefits, and now that he's probably reaching the end of his life, he wanted to flip one last bird at the status-quo by revealing his identity, hehe. He's a class act in my book.

Could they really bring charges against him? I mean, wouldn't the statute of limitations have run out on this a long time ago?

Actually that was part of the story, his identity was not to be revealed until his death. Apparently the daughter came forwrd to the people at the Washington Post who were aware, i think there was 3 the two writers and a editor, and said he wanted to publish the story. Apparently the editors and writers didn't feel he was competent to make that decision and declined so the family went elsewhere.

Bradlee/Bernstein/Woodward probably worried about retaliation against Felt and his family. He made a lot of very powerful enemies. And, if some day he turns up with an icepick through his forehead, I'd hate to be the investigator who had to choose from among the plethora of potential suspects.
