  1. When using one of those AVI to DVD convertion, which resolution should I pick? Let's say I have a .AVI file with a video resolution of 640X480. I want to burn that to a DVD so I could watch it on my regular TV. My TV is just a regular TV, not progressive scan, not HDTV. How will my TV handle that resolution? I want to keep the 640X480 resolution when I upgrade my TV in the future.

  2. I'm afraid that you have little choice as to what resolution you use your DVDs at. The DVD Video specification only allows for a handful of resolutions. The ones that are normally used are higher than your original .AVI file so you should be fine. Check this link out to find out more about the resolutions of DVD (you need to scroll down a bit):

Just in addition to what the snake said, you should be able to resize this to Full D1 (720 x 480/576) without too many hassles, and provided you use a sufficient bitrate, you should get typically decent results, provided that your source is decent to start with, and you use the right settings.

http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm might help you with the process if you're considering getting your hands dirty.
    If in doubt, Google it.
