Just returned from a vacation and have ben grabbing missed TV episodes via Torrent.

What is best and fastest way to place these, all are avi files so far, on a dvd for viewing on TV.

I am presently using Nero to create video dvd's. Process takes just under 2 hours to encode and burn a 365 MB 45 minute show. Realize speed of machine etc can make a difference but am wondering if other programs than Nero do a faster job?

CPU is AMD athlon 1700 1.46 GHZ 512 ram 160 GB hard drive space.

You will probably be getting a formal warning for this thread. Downloading TV eps is against the rules, as illustrated here.

Krispy I have no problem authoring a dvd I just am curious as to whether any programs can do the job quicker than Nero. I don't have the time to try out a lot of different programs to see if one is quicker. Hoping someone has found out already the speediest and can give me a heads up.

Once I have captured a 1 hour TV show (around 2.8 gb) with Hauppage PVR-150, it takes 15 minutes or so to burn the DVD using Nero and P4 2.4 cpu... thats it.....

Thanks for the input. That timeframe is pretty impressive but I suspect the show is already being saved in a file format that doesn't need re-encoding, which it appears to my limited amount of knowledge that an .avi file requires. The burning process of Nero on my machine after Nero re-encodes is only 12 minutes for about 45 minutes of video. The encoding from avi to dvd format takes about 1.5 hrs. I am hoping to reduce this portion of the timeframe if possible.

main concept and cinema craft encoder are two of the faster encoders. I have never used nero for encoding but fro what i have read it's encoder is sub par compared to the dedicated encoders out there.

VSO DivXToDVD is simple and fast. I'd use DVDshrink to join multiple episodes and burn with DVDdecrypter if you don't need menus or TDA if you do.

The pay version of VSO DivXToDVD will have the ability to make menus.

In the future, I wouldn't mention the word torrent. It isn't illegal from what I've read to download episodes if you've payed for the channel through your cable server but people will assume that you are stealing pay TV if you mention Torrent or any other method of downloading episodes.

Slow getting back as I only just watched the show I had put on dvd, but thought I would pass along my experience.

VSO program cut the time to about 45 minutes from the 1 1/2 hrs I had been finding NeroVision Express took. Interesting observation was the encoding used just shy of 1 gb space whereas nero for the same size file used 2.1 gb. I'm a strictly a novice so can't explain it. Video quality appeared fine when viewed.

Would certainly recommend this free VSO program for creating DVd's which will be watched and erased.

All legalities aside (since what's legal changes between countries), I think you'll find that the reason it is frowned upon here is that the Fair Use premise (which this site is based upon) covers the right to time-shift TV, but time-shifting is you capturing the material when it airs and watching it later, not downloading it. AFAIK the point is that you had ample opportunity to capture it when it aired. So you can mention TV eps but just don't mention torrents or downloading, or similarly mention downloading an AVI but don't mention that it's a TV ep or anything.
    If in doubt, Google it.

it is not legal in some countries and as such - is not allowed here ..
