Hi,
I just got this CD from my mother who bought it online and can't play it. It looks like an authentic pressed music CD but when inserted into the CD Player it only spins and won't read. The inside ring on the bottom says TEST TEST all the way around in pink with the pink bars on the outside ring. It looks like some new copy protection scheme except that 5 players have yet to be able to play it. Any ideas?

I would try to contact the Store she purchased it from for a replacement cd. Are you sure it's a CD and not a DVD?
-
And it's a music cd ??
I never saw such a beast!!!
Not with the blocks at the outer edge -
wow, that is weird.. it looks like the "TEST TEST TEST" area is covering the TOC (at the least).
it isnt some type of protective covering (kind of like d-skin)?
the red blocks on the outside are definetly weird, but if the cd werent too long they shouldnt be an issue. -
Yes, definately music CD, well, let's see what the DVD player will do with it....
Yes, it spins it also. I thought that it might be some protective layer that can be removed but no dice. -
what CD is it?
it may have been some kind of production sample or artwork sample.. too weird. -
It's some Hungarian artist's CD. Party Songs. I believe it must be a demo or the first print that wasn't supposed to be distributed.

I think the reason why it says TEST on it is because it's a test CD. The blocks around the edge are there so the spin speed can be checked with a strobe. Much the same as the strobe marks around the edge of any decent record turntable (assuming anyone on here is old enough to remember records!).

CD player, DVD Player, and computer's dvd drive all refuse to play it. They all spin it and stop. Must be some production run copy that was never meant to leave the factory.

If you try to read the data on your PC with Windows Explorer, what does it show? (File extensions, etc.)

i should do this to cd that dont work and sell them on ebay as rare test cd's lol
-
i seriously doubt anything will be able to play that disc.. the blocks on the outside wouldnt be an issue if it were a short cd.. but that inside "TEST TEST TEST" area is what will stop any optical drive dead in its tracks.. its preventing the laser from reading the TOC (if one ever existed), and if it cant read the TOC it wont play the disc.

that is a mechanical test cd used to check hardware used in manufacturing .. they are prob. looking around for it right now ... as those are kinda expensive and used to calibrate the cd handling equipment i believe ..
