I have bought a Pioneer A06/106 I have been trying to back up personal DVD video with this unit with errors showing up. I have the latest firmware 1.07 and have tried a number of different brand name media including the pioneer DVD-r. I have also tried a number of different burning programs including the Nero 6.x that came with the retail version burner in the box. The problem is towards the end of DVD video an error occurs the video goes blocky, defragment or freezes completely. any ideas would be great if anyone can help

You say it's not a media problem, but pixelation towards the end of a burn usually points to the media. But try decreasing the size of the burn and see if the problem gets better.

When I use Shrink for backups I shorten the size to 4364 instead of the Shrink default of 4464. I don't have problems with the larger size, but it's good insurance just in case.

BTW, what software are you using for the transcoding? (If you are backing up a regular DVD)

I have a P104 and a P106 and, IMO the burning program is not usually the source of your type of problem.

  4. Samsung is not that good. Depends on the type, seems like the Beall+R "was" the best (am not sure if Samsung still make them, but anyway i had issues with pixelation towards the end also on these), beall-R is just ok, and Samsung Pleomax is Optodisk/optocrap media.
As you said, the normal Sony works, so it IS a media problem. You could try Verbatim if the Sonys are too expensive, best media for the money IMO.

    Latest OEM firmware is 1.09
    Latest hacked firmware is 1.08

Best media that I've found for my 106 is Prodisc S03 and Ritek G05, both being hub printable

  7. Brand usually means nothing. get dvdinfo and see what discs you are actually using.

I always burn DVD movies via DVD Decrypter. If I just have the Video_ts folder, then I create and ISO first using TDA. Then I burn with decrypter.

I only use Nero for data DVDs
