I have been using nero but i find that sometimes the playback on my dvd player is a bit jumpy. What are good alternatives to nero.

What type of media are you using? The jumpiness might be bad or cheap media.

Try DVD Decrypter. It's free, and rather highly regarded and popular here.

  5. Even Nero can write well on a good dvd. Not that you should use it anyway But try burning at lower speed or buy higher quality media, check out www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
Even if your media is high quality it might not work well in your burner, check what worked for others with same drive as you.

I always use the same media and it's very good quality, i will try burning at a lower speed and maybe try dvdcopy as i remember somewhere someone posting that they had issues with nero.
Keep the suggestions coming and thanks.

  7. Recordnow is veryvery good. Perfect scans at 16x. Almost perfect with dvddecrypter also.
still, the best media in the world will not help if your writer doesnt like them. If those disks used to play perfectly then it could be your burner is getting bad. Maybe cleaning is enough. If you play lots of disks with fingerprints and so on it will not make it better over time.

Edit: Feel free to update your profile with more computer specs so people can see what burner you have, and then you could also tell us what media you use, just MAYBE someone had similar issues with that combination. Check your writer in www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters to see what media has worked well/not so well for others.

    Why shouldn't we use NERO?

The problem you describe is not possible as a burning software issue.

    What media is this?

Being forced to burn slower speeds than the media rating is a dead giveaway that the media is bad.

Switching software will not correct this issue.

This Nero-thing is a long story. In general you could say that burns with Nero isnt quite as good quality as for example recordnow, and there been some compatibility issues. For example, Nero was early with dual layer burning support, but it turned out to be non-compliant. Stability is another problem, thats the main reason for me to not use it, i had some bad experiences there.

If Nero works for you, then use it, its not THAT bad, its just not as good as most other programs. However, if you want to burn dual layer, have a look at for example this first:

Nero is now owned by Sony. Sony are at the forfront of Anti Piracy moves, and in my opinion does not deserve my / your support.

I also suspect the only reason they purchased Nero was to cripple its ability to be used as a piracy tool.

Or maybe Sony needed blu-ray recording software? They are the only ones with drives out, and they CAN afford and ARE allowed to buy in technology they dont have already.
If it was up to me you get a warning for piracy advocating, lucky its non of my business

    Since when?

The ahead.de site shows them to still be their own company. In fact, not too long ago they change the company name to NERO because their flagship product had a more recognizable name.
