    Upgrade question:

    Have:

Nero, v. 6.3.1 (OEM version, came with DVD burner)

    just bought:

    Nero v. 6.6 purchased in a box at Fry's.

Do I need to uninstall before installing the upgrade?

Can't find any answers at NERO.com or in-the-box...

What's the recommended procedure for upgrading, from

Nero 6.3.x to new Nero 6.6.x?

Since you are actually upgrading...uninstall the older version...then install the newer version. Also, after your installation..there is most likely an update on the Nero website.

Hi. Thanks. When I put in my new Nero 6 install CD-ROM, it says it will do the upgrade/install... so I let it go auto...

    Let it upgrade
But also go to www.nero.com and get all the latest upgrades.

    AOK. Thank you!

Now... I'm trying to decide which file extensions to allow for Nero, which for MS Media Player, and for iTunes / Quicktime... ugh!

Don't let nero have any of them.

choose later using "open with" and "chooseprogram"

    Now, that sounds TOO easy!

I wonder ... which progs are best for which extensions... I like to play all my .MP3s in iTunes... best U/I, best features, by far...

But for video, .AVI, .MPG, movies? I have an old, slooooow PC with Win2k PRO. and the DRM stuff in WMP really gets in the way!!! I hate the U/I for WinAMP, it sucks big-time!

Any recommendations for a fully powered, light-weight video player?

Still, I'm very confused about where to put CODECS and which players to use for which files...

    Later!

Light Weight: Media Player Classic or
    Windows MediaPlayer 2 (MS 6.4x)

    Codec Aware: Zoom Player

Payware Necessary for DVD: Cyberlink PowerDVD
    Intervideo WinDVD
    or Sonic CinePlayer
    (one of the above)

with these you play all but WMV and RM correctly
and VideoLan Player is also great to play dvd over network!

Does Nero v6.6 come with it's own set of codecs?

Thanks, dcsos ! PowerDVD came with my DVD burner drive.

I've tried PowerDVD... and, a WinDVD demo...

WinDVD runs VERY poorly on my poor slooow 450MHz AMD Athlon! I suspect it is a CPU hog... PowerDVD seems OK, and iTunes runs real nice...
    even on my Windoze PeeCee!

    BTW,
Does NERO 6.6 supply its own set of CODECS?

Where to find a concise guide to Windows CODECS for novices?

    NEWS -- Nero.com website + Nero 6.6 CD-ROM updates...

Sheesh, they do NOT make it easy!

I bought the Nero 6.6 Ultra package at Fry's, two weeks ago, and it looks like that CD-ROM was made a 3-4 months ago, so that's why I needed some updates....

If you click the nero logo on the Nero Smart Start, it does a little checking for updates available on the web, and versions installed, but it is VERY incomplete...

    http://ww2.nero.com/enu/prog_versions.php

Lists all the version numbers. Then, you have to open each Nero tool in the whole bloody Nero tool suite, and do a right click... About... to find your version numbers. Then, check the version you have against what's listed on the webpage...

    Sheesh...

Then, you have to download five or six different files (some BIG ones) of update packages, one-by-one, that takes almost half an hour with DSL, you get five files, about 100MB.

Then, you gotta install each one of your five or six big downloads separately...

This whole process takes you maybe an hour!!!

You think those smart folks at Nero AG could simply automate this for ya now, wouldn't you??? Sheesh, what a bunch of manual labor Nero makes the user do!!!

Next time, buy the DOWNLOAD online, maybe it saves some time?!

  12. No offense but you need to upgrade your PC,a 450MHz CPU and 192 MB of RAM isn't enough to work with video.....not to mention burn DVD's.

  13. What I want to know...is Nero 6.6 as good as Nero 5.5.10.52...Seriously.

    Try the VIDEOLAN player
the older versions RUN FROM A FOLDER (no install)
and are very small and don't take any CPU work to run this little program
Good for playing DVD's at 450MHZ

If I understand that, what you are suggesting is to just ignore the CD-ROM I got in the retail box, instead:

    1. Download Nero install package from the website.

    2. Install it, and use the KEY that came in the retail box?

That sounds almost too easy ... too good to be true!?

That will work (and is probably the best solution as it will allow a clean install of the latest version).
