plextor 716a computer freezes when disc inserted

i have reinstalled:

aspi drivers
ide channel drivers
all mb drivers
graphic drivers
all burning apps are uninstalled


i have put burner on primary as master and on secondary as master with no other devices attached (hard drivers on sata)

i have done the self dionostics and this is what happens
put in blank disc and it takes about 5 mins and then the disc is ejected which means everything is ok according to book!!!!!! i do this with both dvd and cdr. after the disc is ejected i put it "used disc" back in to see what happens and this time i get one green blink light...same thing happens when i restart computer and put in a "used" disc.

in the book it says if disc is not blank i should get 3 green lights!!!!!!
in book it also says one green means write or read error BUT it only gives the one green blink with "USED" media.

SO WHAT IS THE DEAL?

p.s. this drive was stuck in pio mode and burning at 1x just a week ago, apon firmware upgrades and cable swapping somewhere in there the problems accured. downgrading firmware did not help
