That's not authoring - that's editing. If you want it all in one app, you're on the wrong OS. I don't think you'll find much in the "allinone" strain in Linux - The opposite is more Linux-minded.
Avidemux is good at editing - authoring on Linux is dvdauthor.

Hmm... I'm thinking my post below was possibly missed?

Agree. There are a bunch of URL's in my post below. All of them can cut, edit and combine. The question for me is, which one's do certain things better?

For me to install (and learn) them all would be rather time consuming. It would be really useful if we could get some sort of review dialog going, amongst those who have used some of these packages.

In the off chance you are actually looking for dvd authoring software (ie you already have your video edited precisely the way you like, and just need to create a menu and author the DVD structure), then some apps to consider are below. I have only tried a small handful of them. I currently use "tovid" and/or "KDE Authorwizard", as I can't get "dvdstyler" nor "qdvdauthor" nor "kmediafacotry" nor "varsha" to work properly for me, without getting various program execution errors. I would be very interested in getting a dialog going, comparing the various merits of the programs.

  5. WOW thanks for info. I will be checking them out.

By the way what the difference between editing and authoring? I always thought they were the same.

In your original post you asked about cutting and pasting to which mats.hogberg replied:

My understanding matches the above of mats.hogberg.

ie. ... if you have many clips you want to cut and paste together into one video, with special or fading effects in between, etc .... , and you do so, that is "editing". If you have one clip, and you cut and paste it (removing scenes, changing the order of scenes, etc ... ) to edit it, that is "editing".

But once you have one or more videos in the correct mpg format, and decide you want to create a menu and create a DVD structure ready for burning, that is "authoring".

Perhaps a key word here is "cut". I believe you never "cut" when authoring.

Updated the list, adding Videotrans [a set of scripts that convert a movie file in any format that mplayer understands to a DVD-compatible VOB file, doing all the necessary conversions automatically. An automatic DVD menu generator is also provided.]
