I'm looking for a free (or very inexpensive) DVD authoring software and hoping everyone could provide me with some suggestions. I need to put together a DVD by this Friday so I'm really looking for some simple freeware that I can download and install to create a simple DVD. The files I'm going to be using are AVIs. What I'd like to be able to do is have a main screen where you can play the entire DVD or go to chapter (video) selection and then a submenu where you can select a specific video.

    Any recommendations???

Very simple authoring can be done for free with DVD Flick or FAVC.
Some inexpensive choices include Ulead DVDMovieFactory or Sony DVDArchitect (studio editions).
Just remember, always burn with imgburn.

If you were just asking for a authoring program, GUI for dvdauthor is one choice, or DVDAuthorgui for a very basic program. Both are freeware. But you would need to encode your file to a DVD compatible MPEG first. As mentioned, FAVC is a freeware all in one AVI to DVD converter if you want a even more simple program that can do it all.

If you wanted something other than a very basic menu system, the dvd author programs may be a better choice.

Also take a look at Muxman and Rejig. They are both very simple to use and free.

What I'm looking for is a program that I can take several AVI files and burn them onto a DVD so I guess it's not just authoring software but also the ability to burn to a DVD for viewing. I downloaded DVD Flick last night but haven't tried it yet. Will this do both authoring as well as burning to a DVD? If not, what is the end result of an authoring software? Does it produce and ISO?

Do you know if DVD Flick will also compress the videos to fit on a DVD? The avi files I have are rather large in size so I'd need to be able to compress the file size. Hope that makes sense.

I have what I think is a simple question, but even after reading various guides am still stuck and am hoping someone can point me to a sample script.

I'm using GUI for DVDAuthor (great program) and want to create what I think is a very standard Hollywood-type DVD menu. I have all my "chapters" in separate files, and am trying to figure out how to avoid merging them into one large file and then creating a chapters text file with the time codes (since I don't really know the time codes in advance). They're all video clips, and what I'd like is the option to either play all of them (like a regular movie), or select a starting point from a menu (usually called "Scene Select" in a Hollywood-produced DVD).

I think this can be done without merging them, but I can't figure out how. I'm still struggling a bit with TitleSets v. Videos, so maybe that's where I need to look.

Can someone either point me to a description of how to build this, or even better point me to a sample script that does this?

I don't want the option that plays a short movie and then goes back to the main menu, what I'm really trying to do is select a chapter/scene to begin the movie, and then continue from there, without having to merge the smaller movies into one, sorta like the "Deleted Scenes" "Play All" button in most DVD's (but those go back to the menu if you select just one).

    Thx!

At one time, the (long gone) program

was described as being the easiest solution, that almost anyone could start using right away. Would you say that DVD_Flick is its nearest successor for that title, today ?
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.
