  1. I have recently captured a video from a vhs and there is an odd problem when the camera moves noticabley. It looks like there is a small line moving across the screen that also distorts the image to where it looks like the top half and bottom half of the screen do not match up. I have no idea what this would even be called or what it is but i have attacthed a video and photo of what the video looks like. Note* This video was exported from the PC though an ATI tv-out my old video card. I noticed the flickering type problem at the time of export but there was nothing i could do about. If anyone knows what this is or has any idea on how to remove it or at least reduce it id be greatful. Thanks

  2. What's happening is the ATI card is switching frames in the middle of an image. So the capture device gets the top half of the picture from one frame and the bottom half of the image from the next. This only happens with computer video outout, it won't happen if you capture from a normal video source. I'm not familiar with ATI video cards but there may be a setting that forces it to switch frames only during vertical retrace.

  3. hmmm. Yes that makes senses. thanks alot for your input. do you think there is there any possible way this might be able to be fixed without editing the video frame by frame where this happens? This is the only copy of the footage that i have left.

  4. If I understand correctly: You had a file on your computer. You recorded it to VHS tape via the computer's TV out. You no longer have the original file. You want to capture from the VHS tape. When you watch the VHS tape on TV you see the torn image -- ie, the problem is on the VHS tape.

I don't know of any filters or programs that will fix the problem now that it's on the VHS tape. In the future you should be able to set the ATI card up so that it switches frames during vertical retrace. This will prevent the problem while recording the card's TV out.

  5. Yes, that is exactly right. I lost the original but i have the VHS with the verticle tracing problem. I now know how to fix this error when I use tv out. I have actually known how to correct this problem for 2 years now. The problem was that the video with the tracing error thar you saw was done 3 years ago. Im thinkin my only way to fix this is going to frame by frame...painfully. Im guessing ill just use photoshop and chug away at matching the frames back up correctly. I also have a 300kbps WMV quality file of the video, but again the resolution doesnt compare to the original and the quality overall is not so good. And as far as I am aware, there is no way to enhance the WMV file or "reverse-engineer" the wmv file back to its original divx format. If anyone maybe knows an easier way than frame by frame feel free to speak, bc ill be editng for a while . Junkmalle...thanks alot for your advice...it is the best i have recieved yet on what this issue is even called. I had no idea what it was and my best guess was extreme banding or something.
