?'s about burning...

So I'm brand new to DVD burning, and I have a few questions that I've been looking for the answers to on this forum but haven't had any luck yet so far, so ANY help is much appreciated. First thing - I have an NEC ND-3520A burner, I am using FUJI DVD-RW's and I have both DVD Decrypter and NERO 6.0 - Which one I need to use I have no idea yet. But here's my questions..I have a couple movies and some other video files that i have dl'd onto my harddrive that are in either WMV, AVI, or MPG format that I want to burn to DVD, not SVCD, but DVD. But when I try and use either NERO or DVD Decrypter neither program will allow me to burn, or just doesn't recognize those files all together. So what am I doing wrong? Do I need to convert those files to another format? And if so what format do I convert them to and how do I go about doing so? Again, any help is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks in advance.
