  1. OK, now I'm stumped. I thought ffmpegX 0.0.9q would fix this, but with my setup it hasn't.

I'm trying to consolidate 3 of my DVDs onto one DVD-R to try out my new Philips DVP642 DivX player. So, I extracted VOBs for each one's main feature using 0SEx, and transcoded them into AVIs with XviD video and MP3 audio.

The resulting files play fine with VLC, but on both QuickTime Player and my DVP642, they play the first hour or so, and cut off about 20 minutes early!

To fix this, I even tried rebuilding the index of the resulting .avi file with DivX Tool, but it said it couldn't fix the file because there was a "hole" in the data stream about 1GB in.

    What more can I try?

    Thanks for any help.

  2. AVI files bigger than 1GB are hazardous objects. Which settings were you using to encode? Make sure your image size/bitrate are not too high.

  3. I went back to the GUI and used the mencoder engine. That works, for some reason. I prefer ffmpeg because it's faster, but mencoder only took 2 hours 40 minutes to encode a 1:48 movie, so they've gotten faster than I remember last year.

I believe that it's an error in the original VOB file - I bought the MPEG-2 playback component, and QT Player only plays the first 75% or so. So the original problem must have been with the rip, combined with ffmpeg (but not mencoder) duplicating the problem somehow.

    Thanks for your help.
