What format are the clips in: MPEGs, AVIs (Divx, Xvid, DV etc.), MOV etc. etc.?

Use GSpot (beta v2.52) or AVICodec to get info on files.

What kind of editing do you want to do: trimming or transitions and effects?

Do you want to add audio?

    More info...

To join files to put them on the same directory, they need all to be
    a- of the same type
    b- of the same framesize

So, you encode them all to something same and that way you have them all together
