Yep, I updated the firmware in the Plextor drive to the latest version.

So I insert a blank CDRW into the drive, and it gets identified by Toast 6.07 as a DVD-RAM. However, when the disk is mounted on the desktop, the icon says "CDRW".

I tried running the latest version of Patchburn, that didn't help.

Also, when I try "Erase Disk" on a CDRW, Toast says "Illegal Operation" and "Connection is unstable." I don't see why since it burns DVDs just fine, and it reads CDs well too.

I'm running OS X 10.3.8 on a G4 and the Plextor drive is an internal unit.

I tried several CDRWs, some blank, some used. Toast always identifies them as DVD-RAMs or DVD-ROMs depending on whether they are erased or not. Funny thing is, Toast 6 has no problem identifying CDRWs correctly with the original factory CDRW drive, which I removed to install the Plextor drive.

Is anyone else having this problem?

    Thanks.

It's a problem with Toast. Dragon Burn works OK and once run, then Finder burns and Disk Utility erases work OK also.

See this and this discussion threads on the Toast BBS at Roxio.

See this discussion thread at the Plextor group of CDFreaks BBS. Note -- some denizens start foaming at the mouth upon reading "Mac".
