I understand that DVDShrink and Nero Recode are developed by the same author and therefore are similar.

Why is it that DVDShrink has the feature "Adaptive Error Compensation" (max smooth, smooth sharp, max sharp) and Nero Recode doesnt? Recode only has "High Quality Mode".

It would seem like DVDShrink's AEC feature would be more flexible, making it more powerful than Recode. Does that mean that DVDShrink results in better picture quality?

I know that visual quality is subjective and that I should test it myself. Unfortunately I am not a video expert and dont really know what to look out for. Also, since Recode is still being updated by the author, it may mean that it has better algorithm for transcoding.

Which product would you say is better? I have both so saying DVDShrink is better because it is free wont help me.

    Many Thanks,

  2. I too have both. Personally I find the difference between the two in quality to be negligible. However, if I had to pick I would say that Recode 2 produces ever so slightly better picture quality.

However, Recode 2 does have a significant advantage in one main area over Shrink, Speed!! Nero Recode 2 is significantly faster than Shrink.

    Anyway, hope this information helps.

    Thanks evt.

Which method of "AEC" is Recode using then if its results are similar if not better than DVDShrink?

    Who's to say it doesn't?

Ok, well its not selectable in Recode like it is in Shrink so I assume it only uses 1 form of AEC. Unless Recode chooses the best AEC setting automatically based on the transcoding percentage.
