That's what I said about my PX-708A when I got it. Within less than 50 burns, I was returning it for repair. I'm glad you're happy with it though. Word to the wise, if something goes wrong, CALL them. Forget email. I posted my nightmare a while back...

  4. My PX716a is my favorite drive and its done about 50 burns and keeps on going. Good Luck

Plextor is still the King of Quality!!

  5. Yeah, I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade or anything... Just tossing out some advice. I may debate the "king of quality" part, though everyone is entitled to a dud. I got burned on my PX-708A (no pun intended).

  6. Experienced problems with Plextor CD writers, not so convincing quality over time, but they got the best service and i heard of people getting replacements on the spot instead of waiting for repairs.

How many burns should someone expect out of a dvd burner anyway? Ive done like 500 out of the two burners Ive had for a while (actually 3, but the third was newly added to my PC).
COPIED OVER 600 DVDS SO FAR

I've heard a lot of bad storries about those 712A's HAMP. I don't think anyone is the "King of Quality" anymore as every manufacturer has been a little inconsistent if you go down the line starting with there first burner through there last. The good thing about Plextor is that they offer things like bittsetting and quality testing that is supported by the manufacturer. That is alway a plus for me.

  13. Talking about quality, i miss the Yamaha SCSI models, those were damn good CD writers, i would love to see a DVDR9 writer from them. Where i worked before i replaced the Plextors that broke down with Yamaha's and no more problems occured.

The best thing about my Plextor 708a drive is when the chips are down it comes through for me when I can't rip a scratched disc. From what I've heard the 716a drive is great with newer firmware and with plextools it's even better. I'm waiting to get a Plextor 716AL drive which is a slot drive instead of a tray.

  15. budz, is there a 716SAL also? Before DVDs took over i had only Pioneer slot-in CD drives, slot-in rules. Now i think S-ATA rules and i need one more drive anyways. A 716 with both slot and sata would be mega.

I'm not sure if there will be a 716AL SATA SLOT drive. You can ask that question at the PLEXTOR FORUM at CDFREAKS.COM.

I anxiously await the arrival of the 716AL.

I have Plextor 716a, Pioneer A07, Nec3500 and Benq1620. Benq 1620 produces the finest/fastest burns, Pioneer A07 makes the best burns on the largest assortment of media, Plextor and Pioneer can do copy protected CD's, NEC is most forgiving and will burn most media faster, but at a slightly lesser quality. All four drives are good for certain things. I like my Plextor, but I would have to say best burn quality/speed belongs to BENQ, followed by Pioneer/Plextor tie..

As of now i've done over 2000 burns (data, dvd's and playstation games backups) using my Nec Nd1100 and it still works like new!

  19. I too got a dud Plextor 708 (or was it not a dud?). Burns great CDRs, but it's won't burn a readable DVD disc on nearly all media, even recommended media. I have a stack of 50+ unreadable discs from this drive. I replaced it with a Pioneer 708a, with which I have yet to write an unreadable disc (after more than 500 writes to dozens of different DVD + and - media). So, in my eyes, Pioneer beats Plextor hands down.

I have to agree, Plextor e-mail support is useless, never helped me at all.

I'm happy they are off the market. Paid close to $800 for my first burner -Yamaha, had it replaced twice within 2 years, last one died in about 8 mth of service. Service was not bad but the product... expensive crap.
Btw. Plextor has built a legend around its name in the past. For quite a few years this is no longer true. Good drives but certainly not the "king", not anymore...
