I want a green screen and I think the cheapest option will be to buy green fabric from a fabric store. Since I have never seen a real green screen in person, I'm not sure what shade of green to get. What type of material would be best?

Its far more than color. It's about a tight dot on the vectorscope*. If you want to get serious buy the specfic designed paint and fabric.

shop for price.
* i.e. a highly specific peaked hue and chrominance to the exclusion of similar shades. -
yes, i would think the green fabric would contain millions of shades
whereas an equally lighted specifici blue/green screen has a far smaller toleranceSome people are only alive because it may be illegal to kill them -
What you need is something that will show up ON YOUR VIDEO as uniformly the EXACT SAME COLOR THROUGHOUT. It will need to be absolutely flat, no marks, ripples, etc.
This will be difficult to do with fabric. -

Here's the guy I used...it's the same stuff as the guy in edDV's post except it's considerably cheaper.
One word though, unless you're going to stretch this screen out to make sure it has no wrinkles, you're not going to get a good key. I use Serious Magic Ultra and leave the wrinkles the way they are and the keys still come out better than anything Vegas5 could ever hope for.
Just food for thought. -

It has blue on one side and green on the other. It has it's own metal frame so I can just lean it against a wall and then fold it back up when I'm done.
Is this a good screen? I will only be playing around with it, but I want it to work. -
I know pinnacle sells a green screen fabric for $20. I have two of them and they work great.

If it were me, I'd start with a more trusted source
like http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=pagination&A=nextPage&Q=&catId=1&com...4556_REG=&pn=2
and then shop price for the same product.
some are less expensive than the one you found like this

I've also search user opinions. -
BTW, consumer cameras have more bandwidth in green, so that is the recommended color. Blue optimally requires a 3 chip RGB camera source with RGB outputs..
Here is a good intro
