does the 3 hour LP mode on the ilo dvdrhd04 have better picture quality than the 4 hour mode or is just for saving up on space??
and is the bitrate any different from the 4 hour mode??

Yes, 3hr mode has a higher picture quality than 4hr mode on iLO and LiteOn recorders, but not by much. They both are half-D1 (352x480) resolution and unless you have a VERY good TV you won't notice much difference except screen text (as on shopping channels) will be sharper with 3hr mode. 3hr mode has a higher bitrate than 4hr mode, but I forget exactly how much.

Biterate for LP 3-hour mode is 3.5 and EP 4-hour is about 2.7

I dont think its much better, but its worth the hack if thats what your thinking of. If I'm recording a 3 hour movie or program, then I definately use LP mode. I think a good way to say it is it reduces the mpeg artifacts a tad, but the resolution is still the same.
