The chipset is a very important element in a capture device, however it is not the only one.

Hauppauge are recently very good in the s/w and drivers they provide - critical if the card is to work properly.

Also, the Hauppauge cards are high quality made and it's worth some extra in the price.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. I can't say anything about the Avermedia card but I know a bit about the Hauppauge PVR-150 and own a PVR-250.

Some people with the PVR-150 have complained about audio distortion. The card is recording too loud and clipping. It looks like Hauppauge can fix this with a driver patch -- some people with beta drivers have gotten rid of the distortion (but now have picture problems). Everyone is still waiting for an official release.

The PVR-250 does a good job (and the video capture of the 150 is the same). The best thing about the PVR series is you can still use your computer while it's capturing -- without worrying about dropped frames. There are lots of registry patches and third party utilities that let you tweek the settings.

  5. Because not many people have them.
I love my 250, and with the tweaks from amontillado, it's superb.
The latest 150 driver release supposedly fixes the audio problems.

  7. Like I said, not many own one.
No 3rd party support, very few capture programs will work with it (if any), other than whatever comes with the card.
