  1. I have the Elvis Harum Scarum DVD. The package says Region 1, but I can successfully play it in both Region 1 and Region 2 video machines. But I get the wrong region error message when I set my DVD player to Region 6. DVDInfoPro seems to suggest it supports some but not all regions (see display below).

Is it possible for a DVD to play on multiple region codes without being region-free? My evidence suggests so, but I guess I was under the impression that a given disk could have a maximum of one region code.

When I view it with DVDInfoPro, I get this information:

    Media Information
    Disc Regions are 1,2,3,4
Media code/Manufacturer ID N/A Pressed DVD
    Format Type UDF 1.02
    Volume Name HARUM_SCARUM
    Application id
Implementation id UDF Toshiba DVD Video
    Recording Date/Time (mm/dd/yyyy) 4/27/2004 10:16:47
    Format Capacity 4.03GB(4.32GB)
    Book Type DVD-ROM
    Media Type DVD-ROM
    Data area starting sector 30000h
    Data area end sector 20336Fh
    Linear Density 0.267um/bit
    Track Density 0.74um/track
    Number of Layers 1

    Complete Media Code

  2. Yes, it is possible. It should be as simple as the DVD player reading a section at the start of the disc and saying "What regions will you play in?" - disc says "Region 2" or maybe "Regions 1,3 and 5".

If the DVD player is on the list, it will work. If it isn't it will spit it out.

That's a possible way it might work, anyway.

You can set multiple regions when you back up with DVD Shrink, or do what I do and set it to "No region".

region free or no region is actually just encoding the disc with all current regions, 1-8 so it is actually not region free.
There are actually quite a few commercial dvd's that have anywhere from one region code up to all eight region code's with any region code's they choose to use. As you have discovered
But the same is not true with burned media.

Here is a screencap of a pressed dual layer dvd
