  1. All Right,

A couple weeks ago I bought a whole bunch of old VHS movies and now I want to move them to vcd. The whole encoding deal is no problem I've done it before to tv programs. The problem is MACROVISION.

I heard that all hauppauge cards can defeat macrovision protection, is this true. If its not which cards can or what can I do?

    Any suggestions??

    Thanks.

    Hello,

Yep - I have the wintv pvr250 and does it all by itself - no macro

  3. I read in one of the other posts that the pvr-250 has blocky VHS capture though. Does anyone know if any other card will do the job?

  4. I have NO blockiness in my captures.
If you have multiple mpeg encoders, try them all.
There's somewhere in options to change this.
Don't use WinTV2000, get something good that you can configure and customize like GB-PVR.
Because I have Intervideo software, Sonic/Sony software, Canopus software, et., all these encoders show up in the options list.
I just kept trying one after the other until I got the best one, at the bitrate I wanted.
Generally, 720x480 @ 8500 peak, avg 4000, is good for VHS, although if it's really a good quality tape, then I may go as high as 7000avg.
I also have better luck capturing at the higher bitrate and then authoring, and using DVDShrink if needed, instead of encoding at a lower bitrate.
    Yes, that takes more time.

  6. I've never had a problewm with my wintv card (model 401). I've tested it on things I KNOW were macrovision protected.

  8. The PVR-250/350/500 simply ignore macrovision.
