Replacement for NEC N5100A

I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop fitted with a NEC 5100A burner which wont recognise dvd's, so I am looking at replacing it.

What other brands and models would make a suitable replacement. ?

Are most laptop drives the same dimensions, ie will they fit in most machines?

Thats a good drive but the Bezel that you pull off the 5100 will not fit on the 6500. The 6500 has a generic bezel mounting that will only work with Generic bezel drives. What this means is the clips that are on the 5100 Bezel will not line up to snap onto the 6500 drive. If you want the Bezel to fit you will need to purchase another 5100 or get some glue.

Do you know if a LG 4080 will fit without too many problems, there are a couple available on Ebay for a reasonable price.

The LG 4080 is also a Generic bezel drive. In my opinion, The LG 4080 is a better drive than the ND-6500. The write quality of the drive is better and it supports RAM. You might want to find out if the drive they are selling supports DL writing. Some if the earlier 4080 drives didn't.
If the drive comes with a Bezel you could use the standard Bezel but the cosmetics will not match and you might have Bezel interference issues. Before the Generic bezel standard was released drive suppliers used their own bezel mounting scheme so if you want a drive that works with your Bezel you are stuck with a 5100. NEC did not have a slim DVDRW before that drive.

I finally went with the 4080 brand new on Ebay, for less than half the price that Dell wanted. The front bezel is different but I can live with that, it works and has more features than the one Dell wanted to supply. Thanks all for your input.
