Can somebody please tell me what application/program I need to rip audio from a commercial dvd?

Use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to Elementary Streams , then you will have a Video and Audio File.

I would suggest that you use DvdShrink as it allows you to select the video/audio segment that you are interested in. This will produce a .vob file or files that you can use the free version of TMPGen or my version of bbdmux named demux to split out the audio.

If you have multiple .vob files you will need to first combine them into one file. On a Windows machine get a command prompt:
copy /b vts_01_01.vob + vts_01_02.vob out.mpg
On unix
cat vts_01_01.vob vts_01_02.vob > out.mpg
Now that you have the audio it may be of no use to you as it will either be in AC3, MP2 or PCM format. If your goal is to get an MP3 file or a format that you can put on a music CD you have more work ahead of you.
Check out a free tool called BeSweet and BeSweetGui. This tool will convert the audio into something that may be of more use to you.
I'm not aware of any commercial tools to do this task as the movie studios believe that taking your own DVD and allowing you to play the music off of it in your car CD player or iPod would be wrong.Ted Rossin

I use SmartRipper to extract the WAV file. This wave file is at 48KHz so cannot be burned to audio CD. I down sample it to 44.1Khz using GoldWave, then burn to audio CD.

DGMPGDec will do the trick too (after ripping).

OR you can use a Mac running OSX. Use Mac the Ripper or OseX, the whole process will take you 10 minutes! no fuss!

XMPEG will rip it straight to MP3 or WAV. It's pretty fast and it's free.
