I have a Canon Elura DV which I use as digital pass-trough for my old Hi8 movies and my kids VHS old movies.
Is there a way to trick the copy protection off on this camcorder (firmware, secret menu) or I would have to go with another analog-to-digital convertor/dvd recorder?

Most new devices have Macrovision protection, you need to remove it before it gewts to the capture device.
There's a lot of devices, your mileage will vary. A TBC works best.
