Recorder is JVC DRM-10
I'm still new at using this machine but I've run into a problem...maybe I'm doing something wrong.
When I record to a DVD RAM disk in anything but the SP or XP mode, the files it creates are strange non compliant resolutions.
DVD-RW in LP - 352x480 (compliant)
DVD RAM in LP - 480 x 480
DVD RAM - FR-180 - 535 X 480
Am I doing something wrong or is this just the way the unit actually changes recording speeds (changes resolution rather than bit-rate)
If this is just the nature of how it works...would anyone have a chart or list as to what resolutions are produced by which setting on this model so I can only choose settings that create files in a usable resolution?

Sorry Coluph this isn't going to help you with your problem but I don't think you are doing anything wrong. The recording resolution in each mode is set by the manufacturer.
Well, you know since JVC DVD recorders are the greatest thing since sliced bread, there must be some brilliant reason for the non-DVD standard, non-DVD compliant resolutions in certain modes of JVC DVD recorders. I can't wait to hear from the blue Kool-Aid brigade on this issue. But seriously, in NTSC, if it is not 720x480, 704x480, 352x480, or 352x240, it does not meet the DVD standard. It does not make sense to me why a DVD recorder would record in non-DVD standard resolutions. -
After a little more testing, I think what might be happening, is that with a DVD-RAM disk, it assumes you are going to only be playing it back in that machine, so the resolution won't matter. If you use an RW disk, it seems to stick to a compliant resolution.
Tried another recording:
DVD-RAM LP MODE: 480 x 480
DVD-RW LP MODE: 352 x 480
So I guess the conclusion is, if I want to record in LP mode, I need to stick with RW disks unless I do not plan on bringing it over to the computer after. -
I think the problem is that it's recording in VR mode instead of DVD-VIDEO mode. From what I read in the manual, DVD-RAM can only be recorded in VR mode. Look on page 9 in the manual.

That would explain it. I guess I will stick to RW's if I need to get more on the disk.
So far thats really my only complaint with the unit...the manual is a bit hard to understand, and doesn't really give you alot of detailed information. I supposed more details would confuse the average joe user who isn't using a computer to do the editing.
