I want to convert VOB files to AVI files with no loss of quality. I tried #1 DVD Ripper but quality loss was significant and some of the files end up with no audio. I also tried Auto Gordian Knot set to max quality and it tells me it can't find the audio for some of the files. The VOB files ripped with DVD Decrypter play fine, so the audio is obviously there. What gives?

Can't be done, unless you choose uncompressed AVI or huffyuv codec, in which case the AVI will be gigantic or half-gigantic respectively. You can get OK quality using XviD or DivX codecs, and not too big file sizes.
What DVD to AVI guides have you tried?

Since VOB files are mpeg2, why can't I just convert them to mpeg2 files? I would think if all I want to do is change the container, this should be an easy one-button thing to do. Another wrench - AGK only saves in DivX or Xvid, neither of which are supported by Adobe Premiere. I need the file in Windows Mpeg4 V3 or Mpeg2.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Sure, you can get audio and video out of a VOB with ReJig (m2v + audio in whatever shaper it's in, in the VOB) with little more effort than pressing one button.
If you don't want DivX or Xvid, AGK might be the wrong tool to use?

I tried Rejig and once again get no audio. The web site is for sale, so it looks like they never finished the program. Any others that just do a recompress without file shrinkage?

try demux with tmpgenc, file->mpeg tools->simple demultiplex
    then multiplex back to mpeg2
