I had better things to do. Like stare at the wall.

What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend? -
Watched about 20 minutes (which I'll never get back), and the idiots like Will Smith and Shaq (and everyone before and after) ruined it for me. I couldn't even make it for Dave Chappelle.

missed it... who did Madonna kiss this year?

Does MTV have music videos again?
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
Almost all the new videos are available on the web, so I can't imagine sitting through all the commercials on MTV.

I am embaressed to say I did. I was curious in regards to the music situation these days. It was not as bad as previous award shows because the people were not trying to be "hip-funny". There was no irritating host either which was very refreshing. The lighting and stage props were good. Of course the music sucked with the possible exception of Jet. Also, it also amazes me how some artists can't sing. Chaka Khan for example sang terribly out of tune and she has been in the business for many years. Maybe her voice is gone. Same for Hoobastank and Ashlee Simpson.

I havn't watched MTV, nor have I wanted to watch MTV, in a long time. Then their crappy "Real" world and Road Rules shows got more air time than the Music videos, and they made ads saying "Where are the vids, on MTV2, so buy it!" I started looking for a cable place around here that could give me MuchMusic. Not seeing one I turned to the music video download groups for my music videos. -
I'd rather stare at the wall. 8)

No thayne,
You did not miss much.
@mastersmurfie - you are right. Hoobastank stunk it up. The lead singer sounded horrible. -
I watch it on reruns. All the European MTV versions aired it more than once. I didn't like it. Maybe I'm turning old...
It seems to me that the difference between Europe and America about the music taste is now huge. We talking about day vs night! Here we are more in the electronic music, and classic rock forms started in late 70s and 80s (including modern versions of Gothic, which turn very popular in North and East Europe the last 3 years, probably because is an 80s time warp!)
Example: The open ceremony at the olympics, had DJ Tiesto, a Trance / Progressive Trance Dj from Holland. Trance is the official music of Europe today and in a way, it is what Rock music was back in the early 70s for the Americans. It is the music that unites the new Europe. It is "ours" (Germans, Italians, Greeks (etc papathanasiou), French, Spains, Polish, etc, all help created it the last 30 years...), it is not based on lyrics (a huge problem in a Europe with 25 official languages), it is modern, it is positive.
For USA, Trance (and techno in general...) is a gay thing (as I have been explained from some of my friends there). Hip Hop is the hot thing there, so some variations of modern rock. For us Europeans, Hip Hop and modern rock sounds untasty and totally foreigner! Brits are the exception, and maybe some foreigners located in France, but overall what the American Music Indestry today offers, does not have an international appealing to us.
Maybe that's why the center of MTV Europe moved from UK to Berlin.
BTW, I watched MTV US Awards after the closed ceremony of the Olympics. That make it sound even worst at my ears... (our music is totally different what USA today offers...)La Linea by Osvaldo Cavandoli

Remember when MTV was all hip and cool and edgy? Remember when they would push the envelope on what was considered acceptible on tv?
What happened to that MTV?
Why must I be constantly bombarded with yet another Hip Hop artist or so-called R & B artist who's not so exciting music is being made even less exciting by MTV editing the lyrics and sanitizing it for television? When did "gun" or "drugs" become an unacceptible word on TV? What happened to my wonderful, rebellious MTV?
Ever watch MTV uncensored... nothing UNcensored about it!!! Everything is bleeped out!!! How is that uncensored? ************* should stop trying to be edgy and stop trying to say they cater to both young and not - so - young (11 - 26) and just make MTV a little tykes channel. You know, show reruns of Barney and all that crap... fuckin' teletubbies with stupid little bit... Oh, and in between, show another Hillary Duff video and a Hillary Duff diary... cuz she's so ******* interesting. -
@SatStorm
We've always got The Crystal Method!
Not too many other big electronica acts here in the states.Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -

It started going downhill fast after that when too many higher ups saw the money it was making and got greedy with it.
MTV was pressured into becoming a pop music channel by '83 - before that, they were hard rock, reggae & new wave.
As for pushing the envelope - some of the earliest videos they were airing got yanked right off the bat for being offensive.
Even before most cable companies carried MTV, the small amount of viewers they had still complained.
The first two videos to get pulled were The Rolling Stones, Neighbors and Van Halen's Pretty Woman - David Lee Roth (heavy on the make-up) chasing after a hot chick in thru-out the video and by the end you find out the chick is a dude in drag.
It caused an uproar...and the videos were banned.
MTV started banning and censoring videos shortly after.
Putting a huge CENSORED sign over Joan Jett flipping the bird in her Bad Reputation showed just how far the censorship went.
They did manage to slip in a few 4-letter words during concerts...and amazingly got away with showing Grace Jones's fully exposed bare breast (I guess if the girl looks like guy, it's ok to show skin)
But if you wanted to see the un-edited versions and all the videos that MTV refused to air...you would turn into USA Network's Night Flight on weekends...or The Playboy Channel.
Night Flight did an entire show on all the videos that were too hot for MTV.
There were many that MTV wouldn't show. -
@888888: What you mean by "black metal"? Gothic? If so, yes it is "big" in the underground. Mostly Germany, Scandnavian countres and center / east Europe.
@ViRaL1: The term "electronica" is a US fake to term, to describe various techno acts imported in USA after 1996. Over the years end up being a rock / techno crossover, never popular in Europe. Crystal Method for example have more than 6 years to have a Hit in europe..
In Europe we have: MTV (various local versions) which only rarely air music videos, MTV2 with alternative rock, MTV Base with Hip Hop and modern R'N'B stuff, MTV Hits for teens and MTV Dance (dance / club videos over the night and hip hop / mainstream dance over the day). Also we have VH1 UK (women / gey channel), VH1 European (general music channel), VH2 (brit stuff, only for UK), VH1 Classic (the only channel that airs music videos from 50s to today non stop, many rareties also), TMF UK (pop / mainstream rock crossover), TMF NL (pop / dance / rock - excellent channel but only for Nederlands), MTV 2 Pop (German Channel with pop / dance / hip hop videos non stop) and MTV Classic (The polish version of VH1 European, only better - plenty eurodance videos here!). Finally, the Italians have 2 more channels, MTV Hits Italia (a variation of MTV Hits from UK) and MTV Brand New (focusing on chillout, lounge and pop music).
The "MTV" versions are: European, Nordic, Sweden, NL, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Romania, Poland, Ireland, UK, Germany and Middle East (MTV Mashaweer, you can receive it through the arab package "showtime arabia").
There are also some Asian versions of MTV receivable in Europe: MTV India, MTV Southeast Asia (only on the east mediterenian countries) and MTV Mandarin (huge dishes needed: This is the chinese MTV, receivable with 8 meter dishes in East Europe).
We waiting an African version of MTV the next year...La Linea by Osvaldo Cavandoli

Yes, that was a very late reply! Ha ha ha ha
Here in Hellas (Greece) we call what you mention as "Black Metal" with the terms "Nordic Metal" or "new Gothic". There is also another - old - term "Death metal", which was a late 80s / early 90s thing. Maybe Black Metal is a revival?
Meanwhile, in Europe we have changes: Now, the "new" paneuropean sound, is "Electro", a crossover of 80s new wave, 80s NDW, 80s Electropop, Early 90s Trance & late 90s French house vocals...
Many acts have a Canadian / USA background so, I would like to ask you if that "Electro" is known in USA.
Vocal Trance / Eurodance currently has a great distribution problem, basicly because Viacom now owns almost ALL the European music channels and don't show european music (only UK/ USA stuff).

The sound of Detroit is well known to Europe as "Detroit Techno". It was the base for the 1988's "Acid" music (still exist as Acid Trance)
Back in the 90s they had a crossover of detroit techno and hip hop. That lead to Electronica (Fat boy slim, etc). This is the only "Techno" from Europe that Americans "Like" from what I know.
Today's Electro perfect example is a group called Client. You don't know which decade you are listening some times... 80s, 90s or 00s?La Linea by Osvaldo Cavandoli
