Hey there!
Mrs. Santa got me a new dual layer DVD burner! She bought me the Sony DRX710UL although I see on the MacWarehouse (CDW) site that the model number for the Mac compatible version is DRX710UL-T.
So before I open the box, can anyone tell me if this will work with my G5?
Thanks and happy holidays!

I just answered my own question: I think the "T" stands for the copy of Toast Lite that is included with the Mac compatible unit since this one works just fine and Toast ver 6 recognized it as soon as I activated it. No additional drivers to load in OS 10.3.7! Really makes me glad once again that I own a Mac!
I'm burning a copy of a 4.7 GB dvd from my Mac's Superdrive to the beautiful Sony external in 13 minutes on Verbatim 4x -R media (movie reel). Then I will test it in my Yamaha D-2300 Mark II player.
It writes on both + & - R & RW disks at up to 16x and writes + R DL at 2.4x.
Sony has DL media for sale for @ 9.99 US at their Sonystyle online store. Seems a bit steep yet.Merlin Macuser

Yes the media price is still steep. You can get discs at Dell through the end of the year for $5.65 each in packs of three after rebate.
[Update:] Just noticed they've gone up $2 since the other day. -
yes, this is a great drive. sony and roxio announced a few months ago that they were bundling toast.

congrats on the gift!
Thanks also for clarifying the differences in model numbers...I shall file the info away for future use.
cheers! -
Just got DRX710UL. Am using it with HP Pavilion a330n. Can unit be used without the Nero bundle included with the unit?
-
Nero is a Windows program. In order to use this unit with a Mac you need to have some kind of DVD authoring and /or burning software installed.
Look for the freeware PatchBurn which will allow your Sony to burn from the desktop or buy Toast from Roxio/Sonic. That's all you need to use this with a Mac. The model number DRX710UL-T comes with a copy of Toast Lite so it can be read by a Mac. However PatchBurn should work to let you use it with iDVD.Merlin Macuser

Sorry Andrew, I know very little about the world of Windows or HP systems. I don't even know what a a330n might be. You may not realize but you've posted your question in a Mac users forum. Suggest trying one where they speak Windows.Originally Posted by Andrew Robinson

MERLIN,
i too got the windows version, and have not tried hooking it up yet. I noticed you said youdidnt have to load any drivers, have you found any problems yet? Will this drive show up on my desktop like an exteral hard drive? Or will I have to find it? (i just got my Mac, and i'm still not familiar with the OS)... -
Salty, NO PROBLEMS! This is a great drive.
As far as I can tell, there are NO differences between the PC and Mac versions except the Mac version comes with Toast Lite. If you have a dvd burning application like Dragon Burn or Toast already, you should have no problems. Welcome to the Mac!Merlin Macuser
