The captured .avi files take too much space, does it mean it also has the best quality? for archiving, what's the best way to keep the file size small yet the quality the same? if converted to .mpeg, can I get the same quality when editting in Premiere then export as .avi files?

Captured avi files are definately not good for archiving, they take up so much room cause capture codecs don't efficinetly use bitrate... they give the frames as much as is neccessary. If you want to edit first then keep them in the captured form till you export, but if you plan on storing them convert to a high bitrate mpeg first.

the definetly BEST Codec is DivX, if you want to use the Video-Files on your PC only.
But If your want to capture directly to DivX, you need a very fast machine! (Athlon >1,4Gig)
