How To Produce High Quality WMV from AVI / DVD Files?

Hello.

I'm wondering which programs and/or methods can produce me very nice quality WMV files from AVI and DVD material ( vob files ).

Freewares and not freewares are welcome to be mentioned. :P

1) rip to hard drive e.g. anydvd , dvdfab
2) encode

freeware - hdconverttox , wmnicenc, ffmpeg , wmvmuxer, automkv, encode hd / encode 360 , wme

paid - ms expression encoder

WVC1 will give you slightly better quality for the same bitrate compared to WMV3

Avoid FFmpeg for WMV, it only does WMV v.7/8 and it's not very good at doing those.

Tmpgenc Express is pretty good with Windows Media files, Encode360 is pretty simple to use and produces decent results.

Not really, comparing WMV v.9 to VC-1 is like comparing DivX to MPEG4-ASP, they are basically the same.
