I have some AVI's that I want to burn onto DVD-R and play on my modded XBOX (yes i know I can save them on my hard drive too)

Just wondering, I'm using Nero to burn, what format do I use? ISO or UDF?

And if UDF do I select the Force DVD/Video....... option if its just AVI's?

I never said AVI was a format?

I'm asking what type of burn format do I use - ISO or UDF when creating a data disc for the Xbox to be able to read?

    Codecs are Divx 3 & 5, Xvid

XBOX uses a subset of Windows, more or less. Doesn't matter. If windows reads it, XBOX probably will too. ISO.

    Hello,

You may want to try mpg first for the xbox. When I was able to get my soft mod working it played mpg off the harddrive without a problem. I didn't experiment enough with avi. Just a suggestion. Good luck.

  8. Nero has a 'force xbox compatibility mode' so try that, if your Nero has it.

I have burned several DivX videos as data DVD's and some I've burned separately to CD-RW and all playback without a problem using XBOX media center.

I thought that's a hardware thing not software?

It is a "hardware thing", yes.

Officially, the XboX will only play factory-pressed CD-Audio discs, DVD movies, and XboX Game Discs. Period. It is purposefully intended to not support any kind of burned media.

The fact that some un-modified XboXes will play burned discs out of the box is just an accident of manufacturing, since Microsoft uses drives from several different manufacturers and don't have the time to tweak every single drive on the production line... but if that unit ever goes to the repair center, they will adjust the drive so that it won't recognize -R/-RW media any more. So if you've got one that plays recordables, keep your fingers crossed that nothing ever goes wrong with it.

You give them too much credit. Fact is, they never imagined the "mighty MS product" could ever be modded. It is unlikely they went to great lengths to "insure burned media cannot be used" especially considering the R&D time of XBOX (burners were $1000 in 2001). The fact that drives do or don't play burned media is more coincidence than anything else. Most drives from yesteryear didn't play nice with burned media. Never have. I have a Thomson drive, works fine with most media.

  16. I have a Thomson drive in my XBOX also and was surprised when it played the dvd-r's from my PC and Panny. Heck I was delighted when it played the ones from the PC because there encoded with MP2 audio which I don't think is offical for regon 1 dvd's.

It's not the "SPEC" for region 1 but it is fully playable. Technically an ac3 or pcm track MUST be on the disc for it to be able to also play mp2. BUT my wintv pvr250 only records mp2 audio and I've never had a problem playing mp2 audio only discs on any dvd player I've come across (in the US).

I use nero and burn them to disk just as if I was saving data files, zips, docs, etc.
XBMC will recognize and play the video file right off the DVD/CD-R on a modded XBOX.
