  4. I think that you will get more for your money with the Yamaha. I have an Onkyo, which I am very pleased with. I would stay away from Sony and others that do not use discrete amplifiers. Much of the decision is based on your unique requirements: DTS, S-Video or Component Video switching, lots of DSP effects (or NOT), speakers, and so much more. Here is a link that may help you find some more info.

  5. just to give you an idea. i spent almost six full months shopping around for my reciever, then the next year building onto it. i wanted all the sound for little cost. i would shop around and listen to what everything sounds like. remember when doing this, the sound is gonna be alot different in your own home than in the store. soon as i have the cash though, i'm going for a Bose system. i have heard nothing else that can compaire to it. what about your speakers and sub? do you already have those. quality is all in your judgement.....

  6. i agree with bags. Yamaha will go farther. and all the extra little things he mentioned such as DTS, S-Video, and those things, make sure you get. unfortunatly i am stuck without the S-Video but i sure as hell wish i had it now......

  7. im completely renovating my home theater. My first set of equipment included a sony prologic system with a badd klh speaker set. Its a shame I know. My Sony 51inch widescreen HDTV will be delivered friday. I have a progressive scan DVD and the Klipsch Synergy series speakers. (2 SB2s, 1 SC1, 1 KSW10, and 2 SS.5s)

So i assume the amplifiers in the Denon and Yamaha is what seperates them from the lower sony models?

Also - Too bad there arent any recievers in this price range with component video in and out for my HDTV, this way i could use less remotes.

  8. less remotes.lol.. try the ALL IN ONE remote. i forget the company but its about 100 bucks. i used it for a while till it fell in a sink of water. it was the only one i could find that could control EVRYTHING i have. coolest part was it had an antenna that allowed me to stick all my equiptment in a closet and was able to control it from anyware in the house. only thing in the room was tv and speakers(with a little speaker wire showing from the wall jacks). but yes, if your spending your cash on other top dollar equiptment then you want it all. shame to have to turn around in about 4 years and upgrade again. but like i said, if i had the cash i would be sold on a Bose.

  9. Yes the amp makes a big difference. Sony uses on IC (integrated circuit) amp where as Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, NAD and others use discrete components. The difference in the peak current the amp can deliver. Higher current will give better transient response as well as drive lower ohm speakers.

    Have fun shopping.

  10. heh, Ive seen those "system commander" remotes but I thought they were more pricey. A friend has a microsoft one with touch screen.

In my experiences Bose has old technology and is overpriced. But hey..

Yeah basically I dont know what to do about remotes. Lets say im watching satellite, and I want to switch to DVD. I have to switch it on the monitor, and then on the reciever, and then i have to do what i have to do with the DVD remote. What a pain this will be.

  11. yeah thanks. I wont do much shopping. I think ill just goto tweeter and pick one up after talking to those guys.

From what I remember there is a seperate power supply for each channel on the discrete amps. As opposed to one power supply on the sonys. Is this correct?

  12. Well Ive been doing some research. Lets compare the Denon AVR-1602 with the Yamaha HTR-5450.

I think one of the major differences between these two is the Dolby Pro Logic II. The Yamaha is not equipped with this feature and the Denon is. Other than that, the Yamaha is just a litle bit higher with inputs and such.

The Yamaha has 4 optical inputs whereas the Denon has 1. The Yamaha has 80 watts per channel wheras the Denon has 70. The Yamaha has a headphone "silent cinema dsp" effect and the Denon does not. Some of these features make me wonder if I would ever use them? Like for instance an optical input on the front. Or the headphone feature.

In my opinion, it is either get the ProLogic II feature or the 4 optical jacks.

    what do you guys think?
