  3. Download the latest version of AVG.

Then download the newest definitions update file directly from the website.

When you install AVG and try to update for the first time, it will ask you if you want to go onto the internet or do the update from a local folder.

Choose local folder and point to the downloaded update file.

Whatever happened to good ole fashion sos disks and rescue disks. My concern with downloading any virus protection on an infected system is that if the virus is memory resident it can hide itself from the antivirus software when it scans eventually infecting the antivirus software.

It sounds like alot of work but the benefit of knowing you would have a clean drive would be to remove the harddrive and put it in a clean antivirused protected system. Shutting down the proper ide channel prior to installation of the drive should prevent any viruses infecting the clean system. Reenable the channel only after the system is fully booted.

If thats to complicated a scan over a network works sometimes too. But since the intro of win2k and xp they seem a little protective of their own system files being scanned by an outside system. So it doesn't always work.

Just my thoughts on the situation.

  5. You can make a scanning boot disk with AVG as well...

Alternatively, boot your system with Knoppix or some other live CD Linux distribution. Use the Captive-NTFS system to get read/write access to your HDD.

Then, connect to the net and install an AV proggy like ? F-Prot which comes in a Linux version. Scan your Windows HDD from Linux.
