Since I downloaded Adaware SE, the program was never able to complete a deep system scan. I did a couple of "smart scans" I think they're called (I'm writing from work so I can't check), but lately it gets stuck even on those. By "stuck" I mean that it stops on a certain file and it stays there for a hour and a half (that's where I generally draw the line and stop the process). What can it be?

I also ran spybot and I had no problems with it...

Thanks for droppin some knowledge on me!

    1) What file is it hanging up on?

    2) Have you tried scanning in safe mode?
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

  3. I had the same thing happen on a computer that had about 300 spyway entries. I finally had to reformat and reinstall the whole machine to get rid of it all. You could try running other spyware tools like microsofts new one and see if it helps.

'hope I won't have to do that, Poppa!

And thanks, VIRaL1, I'll try to run adaware in safe mode when I get home from work.

You guys have heard of a tool called "Killbox"?

OK, VIRaL1, I got some more info for you.

During the weekend I tried to run a full system scan with adaware in safe mode. It got stuck the first time on C:\Program files\WinRAR (??)

So I uninstalled WinRAR, cleaned up the directory and tried again. This time it got stuck on C:\Program files\WinMX, and I just deleted the directory cuz it's been ages since I removed winmx from my computer. Then I tried to run adaware again and this time it got stuck on C:\Program files\Windowsupdate... !!!!

I just don't get it: what's the problem??

    Thanks again for helpin out.

It seems to be freezing on specific files. I was just making sure you've checked for file system damage.

In my experience, even if your anitvirus is always running in the background, I've had it overlook a virus before and the only way to get rid of it is to do a full system scan for viruses. Plus, if for some reason it hangs on a file or something then you know it's not Ad Aware but your computer and you may have to do a clean install of everything to get rid of the problem.

From the sound of it, you may want to run a full check on your C: drive and have it automatically fix errors found.

    hey guys

After endless scandisks and defrags i could finally get adaware to complete a full scan of my machine... The bad news is that the problems i'm having with certain software are not due to spyware... but at least i can start narrowing down my options!

thanks for your priceless advice :-
