That being said, if I move into an area where they not complain about a TV antenna, I would like to install one.

If anyone have any suggestion about installing antenna, let me know.

Where can I find good selection of rotors, rotor controllers?
RadioShack is no carrying a good selection of antenna and parts anymore.

If I install an antenna outdoors, I could get better reception of TV channels than the set-top antenna.

Are you talking the type that clip the top of the dish? I don't have dish.

If you talking about getting satellite TV, I already had it and don't want it.

Antenna TV is free. Why pay for TV?

Actually I got overall better reception when I moved my antenna into the rafters of my garage than I did when it was installed on the roof. If your garage roof is uninsulated and you're not using lead tiles that would be a good place for one.

Just be glad also that we get free television. In the UK they have to pay for OTA (over the air) television.

Sort of. we have to pay for a licence to own a TV. or a TV/VCR capable of receiving broadcast signals, anyway. if you just had a plasma screen connected to a DVD player you don't need the licence.

Exactly how do they make you pay to own a TV? Enforcement question...

i believe they keep a list of addresses who do not own a licence. they then park a detector van outside these houses, tuned to (IIRC) the frequency of the electron gun in your TV. so they can tell if you're watching a live broadcast, if you are they bust you.

Probably the detector stuff is just bollocks, i expect they just look through your front window to see if you have a TV.

Doesn't mean you're getting live broadcasts.

Also, anytime you putchase any device that includes a TV tuner (TV set, VCR, DVD recorder or even PC card), the retailer is obliged by law to provide tour name and address to the licensing authorities. They then check that thare is a valid license for that address. May not be fool proof but goes a long way to ensuring evryone pays up, that along with fines of up to £2000 for not having one

  11. They are incredibly accurate at detecting you, too.

What if you have somebody else's TV? Say you aren't on record of having a license but one of your friends has given you a TV, or simply loaned you one. What then? Now that they have detected a device receiving signals at an address that there shouldn't be one and pulled up their jackboots to kick in your doors and find your illegal device, what is the penalty for this? Assuming that there's actually been a crime and not just a big misunderstanding.

Sounds like a bunch of bullshit to me.

I don't know if detector vans really work, but enough people get caught and prosecuted to act as a deterrent to most others.

Wow, I didn't realize how many (Americans) didn't know about this. This being a video forum I thought it would have come up a few times before. Maybe we won't take our free television for granted so much anymore (it's all I've got out here after all ).

  15. Well, at least the BBC channels are advertising free!! (as long as you don't count the many advertisments for upcoming programs, programs on other BBC channels, adverts for the BBC radio services etc etc...)

I remember hearing of the licensing thing before. I always said that if I had to live there I wouldn't own a TV. Ive never had to, but I was there for 4 months and I remember the commercials reminding people to pay for it. Ther was also a newsstand under Charing Cross station that would take payments for the TV License.
Not trying to be offensive, but BBC had no shows that I thought interesting. The only shows had were about antiques or yards. There are a couple of old British TV shows that I do like, I seen them here before going. But I never saw them there. Just antiques and yard stuff.

    Yep

The BBC funds some very good nature programs, and the digital BBC channels have some very good comedy on them.
