Are there any good freeware options to convert .rm real media files to avi or mpeg-2? All I found were software packages for $30+.

Real Alternative combined with VirtualDubMod can get you AVI from rm. Both are free.

Can't see how that would work without AVISynth and directshowsource(). Fortunatly AVISynth is also free. Unfortunatly Real Alternative is not legal though. That is if you are after a legally free solution.

I only do the conversion when absolutely necessary, obviously. -
If you copy the rm file to your webspace (assumming that it will fit) , then use the Realtime Convertor on it from http://r7cproj.euro.ru (read all the instructions) and then feed the url of it to the convertor and (set options) and then let it do its stuff .
The software is from 2002 , so I dont know if it will cope with all the updated codecs - not sure exactly how it works , whether it uses installed codecs or its own (no I havent read all the instructions for years as I dont use it anymore) , tried it on an old rm file I had and it worked though . -
I would just suggest paying the $30 and be done with it, at least you know you have something less buggy than freeware. I used to be against buying software online back in the day, but now I buy and download software all the time. If money isn't a problem it's a lot easier than looking and researching freeware.
I haven't bought it yet, but this is some software I'm looking to buy. http://www.tomdownload.com/new_add/new20031209/colorful_dvd_editor.htm
It will convert RM, Divx, Xvid, WMA & DV to VCD, SVCD, & DVD. It's only $25. I'm just trying to find out more about it before I go ahead and get it. -
I suggest just not using RM, it's a degenerate codec that SHOULD have gone away just like VIVO did...
