  1. If a dvd does not have the VIDEO_TS.VOB file (needed for DVD Shrink according to guide) is there a way to rip and encode using these two programs?

A DVD will have this if the DVD structure requires it. Some DVD downloads don't always have the full compliment. You might also see something like this if you rip a newer DVD with the new protection using an earlier version of DVD Decrypter.

  3. The thing is I can't seem to backup my copy of the movie "Taking Lives". DVDShrink stops encoding at 97% and Decrypter won't give me a VIDEO_TS.VOB file. I have the newest versions of both. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Use ISO Read in Decrypter. Mount the image in Daemon Tools. Open the virtual disc in Shrink and shrink-a-way!
