If the source audio is AC3 or MP3 I would preserve AC3/MP3 using Direct Stream Copy for audio in VirtualDub. If not, I usually use same sampling rate as the source for example 44.4kHz or 48kHz and use 128kbps for bitrate.
But you mentioned QPel which is something ot do with video not audio, I assume that you want to reencode your avi files because they don't play? If so, and it's becuase of the QPel (and/or GMC) then you can just do Direct Stream Copy for audio and reencode only the video and clicking "Load Defaults" in the XviD codec settings and choose quantization value of 4 or 3 or 2. But for me reencoding loads of QPel/GMC AVI wouldn't be fun. I would just get a new player that supports QPel and GMC. -
Use VBR MP3, you'll get the best size vs. quality audio.
I use 192kbps VBR MP3 with all my XviD backups and it sounds great on my TVs, I can't tell the difference with DVD AC3.
