If I make an mpeg4 from an mpeg2 using Nero Recode2 - just did that and turned a 3.5 gb file into a 600 mb file (approx.), what's the procedure for buring the mpeg4 to DVD so it's wachable on a regular stand alone DVD player?

  2. You can't. There's only a very small number of DVD players that can play MP4, 'regular' DVD players cannot play them. Search for Philips 642 if you want info on a popular player that sells for about $65 that can play most of these discs.

    Thanks!

How would you burn the file to DVD with Nero. When I go nto NV Express, somehow it expands bact to 3.5 GB magically.

  4. If you wanted to burn the MP4, you'd just burn it as a data CD. You wouldn't do any sort of conversion, and there'd be no reason to use a DVD. Sounds like Nero is going to convert it back to a DVD Video compatible disc if it is saying 3.5gb as you say. You DON'T want to do that.

Like I said, unless you have one of these special DVD players, you're wasting your time. And if you don't know if your player can play an MP4 disc or not, it can't.

So if I were to get one of those players (cheap!) how would I burn it to DVD?

Just burn it as a regular data file. As it's only 600 MB, a CD will do - even be preferable. Some AVI/DivX/XviD players only read AVI from CD - thinking every DVD is a Video DVD

I see. Thanks!! I was thinking, with a DVD, I could fit lots of episodes of a TV show, for instance.

I love it when people ignore my answer and ask it again

edit: (the same answer would apply on a DVD, burn as data)

Should point out that in this case we are talking mp4 and not avi. Make sure that the player actually supports the mp4 container and not just MPEG4 video in avi. Also if you use aac for audio, make sure that it supports that to and not just mp4's with mp3 audio.

I have a question along the same lines. If for some reason I ever decide to create an MPEG4 file with Nero, how would someone else go about viewing it on their computer if they didn't have Nero 6? Are there codecs that can be downloaded for free?

Prot, when you say MPEG-4 do you mean DIVX or XVID, as those are the familiar versions of that format? If so, you can use VLC media player. It plays almost anything. Or you can install FFDshow. It will install the codecs generally needed for this format. This will let other players play this type of files.

You don't need Nero to play anything. It has nothing to do with playback, other than producing a compatible file.

BTW, you should start a new topic if your question does not directly address the topic you are replying to.

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot about Nero Digital video, that's a format I'm not too familiar with and have never used.

Nero has a lot to do with playback, it comes with directshow filters exactly for that purpose.

VLC should play back Nero Digital mp4's fine, including those containing AVC if you have a recent nightly build. ffdshow can also decode Nero Digital MPEG4, AVC and aac audio, you still however need an mp4 splitter/parser filter.
