I don't know why you can't delete it but try booting into safe mode. Hit F8 while your computer is booting up. You should be able to delete it then. -
still here no heart attack hit f8 went into safe mode and it worked a treat thanks for all your help

Now did you try to Delete from the Recycle Bin? this could also show the same problem.

There is a bug (well, there's thousands actually, but one that is relevant) in Windows XP that won't allow files larger than a certain size to be deleted. Some time ago I found mention of a registry change that overcomes this but can't find it at the moment, maybe someone else remembers it.
You may be able to delete it if you boot into safe mode or you can delete it from within the MS Dos Command Prompt.
Identify where the file lives, open the Command Prompt window and type:
del C:\"full path"\filename (substitutefull path for the location of the file).
What you have to bear in mind though is that under the Command Prompt the Directory and file names may revert to DOS 8+3 format. If this is the case, Program Files becomes Progra~1. The directory name becomes the first 6 letters followed by a tilde (~) followed by a number which will be 1 unless you have more than one directory where the first 6 letters of the name are the same. -
@Richard_G:
I haven't heard of that before (not that that means anything), but I regularly delete AVI files that are up to 150GB (yes, 150 GB
) without any hassles without going into safe mode or using DOS prompts. I have SP2 though - can you recall if it might only apply to pre-SP1 or SP2 installs ?
If in doubt, Google it. -
I have heard of this problem , I think there was once a sticky on how to fix it.
-
May be this might fix your problem. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del end this service "devldr32" if it exits and then try deleting it.
-
Never heard of it. Have SP1 here.

This is a very well known problem with winxp in that it reads the avi info into memory and doesnt release it sometimes, the fix is to delete the registry entry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D9 4-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}]
@="Avi Properties Handler"
The only thing is you wont be able to right click on the avi and read the properties anymore.I think, therefore i am a hamster. -
