I've having a hard time figuring out this exact drive. It opens from the bottom, and I cannot seem to get to the lens. The faceplate won't come off. I think I did it once before, long ago, but I don't remember how anymore.

I figured it out. You have to eject the tray before opening the drive. Just be warned you may have to hot-swap power because some systems force the trays to close before shutting off.

I was going to say that I had done it, but I wouldn't have been much help because I can't remember what I did. My cleaning worked pretty well though. Haven't had to clean it for 6 months or so.

  4. I tried cleaning mine...

It's in the landfill now...it's a pain and I have little patience.

My DVD laser died. I've had this drive almost 2 years to the day, and it has gone through heavy use. I would guess at least 5,000 burns. It's now just a CD-ROM. Maybe CD burner, but have not tested.

The laser simply died in the middle of a burn, and it no longer registers DVD media of any kind, blank, pressed, nothing. Dead as far as I can see.

It took a while to open and clean (but I DID take photos so I can make a cleaning guide finally), but was no good this time around.
