  1. Does anybody know if the 25 pack of Maxell DVD-R on sale at Office Depot for $10 is made in Japan?

It's probably a mix. Best thing to do is check the package before you buy.

Maxell has used Ritek (Taiwan) and Taiyo Yuden (Japan).

The ones I got (8x+R) in NC were Maxell 002, but I could not burn at 8x without huge errors. I can burn the Fuji 8x at Best Buys (same price) at 8x with almost no errors.

My guess is the "Made in Taiwan" sticker came off the packaging, since Ricoh discs are all made in Taiwan by Ritek.

  9. There are two types being sold at the same price.

There's the "yellow" top Maxells 4x media, made in Japan. These are Taiyo Yudens.

There's also the "gold" top Maxells 8x media, made in Japan. These are MXL RG03. This is relatively new but so far the feedback is good.

I haven't tried them yet. The only thing I didn't like is quality control. Disk surfaces had dust particles and the edges of the disk doesn't seem to be smooth. This is how they came out of the package new. Compare these to some Sony's and man... big difference.

But will check them out and see.

The yellow tops 4x Maxells "MADE IN JAPAN" are not always TAIYO YUDEN, they are also maxells own media code MXL RG02 which is just as good as TAIYO YUDEN.
