Price really doesnt matter to me as I want quality burns on my DVD backups that are going to last and not get jittery the first couple times I play them back.
I'm assuming right now that Taiyo Yuden is the best but I'd like to hear from a few of u that are still using this DVD burner what ur opinions are![]()
Thanks in advance

as long as you stick to the RECOMMENDED BRANDS of DVD MEDIA that PLEXTOR supports then you will do fine. i have used with success DVD-R FUJI (TAIYO YUDEN) 4x speed & MAXELL 4x speed media which burns flawlessly on my PLEXTOR 708a drive. Both of those brands with the "MADE IN JAPAN" on the label are the one's to purchase. i have also used IMATION 4x speed DVD+R (RICOH) which can be burned @ 8x the speed. i have used RITEK G04 which is on PLEXTOR's compatibility list but the quality of RITEK has gone downhill so I don't use them anymore.
prices for media are getting cheap since the newer 16x drives are on the market. i have never used prodisc on my 708a drive but used them in my pioneer 107d drive which works fine.
the 708a drive can now support bitsetting for DVD+R media as long as you use firmware 1.08, plextools from version 2.17 or later and nero version 6.3.1.25 or later. hope this helps you out.
what i find amazing is the buffer level in nero is steady at 92 when i burn with my 708a drive. with my other drives the buffer level fluctuates between 85-95 or so. in my experience with the 708a the burn quality is excellent. i also had a problem with a disc not being able to be read by any of my dvdroms or other dvdrw's but the 708a was able to read the disc perfectly. there was a scratch towards the end of the disc which prevented me from ripping the disc. gotta love the plextor 708a -
Recommended media is a good start.
As a side note, Plextor chose Taiyo Yuden to sell under their own brand name discs.
RICOH (maxell 4x +R made in taiwan)
Any Maxell (made in Japan)
Verbatim (MCC) - 8x -R media (I have heard good reports of this, at least with the 712A anyways). Some people say dog is mans best friend. I say that man is dog's best slave... At least that is what my dogs think. -
Alright I pretty much figured I would go with the Taiyo just wanted to be sure.
rima.com seems to have pretty good price of $68 on 100pks of these which seems good to me for 8x discs.
My only other question is that they have it in +R and -R for the same price.
Is one or the other preferrable? Or does it really not matter?
thanks so much for all the help guys! -
i like -r becuase it had an honest birth. +r was a result of greed and it really screwed up a lot of things.
But either one works the same, compatibility isnt really an issue -
What we are using fleeps, is written on the left column, under writers & some under media.

The DVD Media page has it covered. Better, Covered Up if you do not have search skills.
Whithout buying online, I am unable to find any Made In Japan media. I keep looking through the sales Media at Best Buy, Circuit City and CompUsa.
+R's burned in the 708A will not play in the house Panasonic DVD/VHS player.
-R Media that has worked well in the 708A:- Memorex ProdiscF01 (is that F oh 1 or F zero 1?) 8X
- RITEK G04
- TDK TTG01 4X
- TDK (Circuit City white printable)TTG02 8X

by enabling BITSETTING on the DVD+R media the Panasonic standalone dvd players that are manufactured not to play them back now can because of the BITSETTING. i've tested discs burned with bitsetting enabled and they work in the Panasonic dvd players old models as well as new ones. -

In older burners, +R was quicker to utilize higher burn speeds. Not much of an issue any more. -
V 2.19 will not install. It aborts after not finding PlexTools installed.
I will try downloading 2.17. If that doesnt work, I may try one of the older versions and updating with 2.17/2.19
What am I missing here?
