A question about Taiyo Yuden.

I'm finally making the switch from Verbatim to Taiyo Yuden and I have a question about the TYs.
Is there any actual record/playback quality difference among the various versions of the premium 8x and 16x DVD-Rs. I am mainly wondering if anyone has experienced any noticeable difference in the burning process or playback quality and DVD player compatibility among the silver lacquer, thermal silver lacquer, silver inkjet, white hub printable, or white inkjet versions of the 8x and 16x discs.

NO. My burners seem to prefer Verbatim (older 4X ones) over TYs, except for the watershields (sssslliiccckk!!!)

I can't tell on the play back...yet, time may tell. But, I get the best scans from 8x +R media and I burn at 12x. The difference is small between the + and -, and a little greater with 8x vs 16x, but this is my observation with well over a 1000 burns on 5 different burners (liteon, NEC, BenQ, LG and Pioneer). For the recored I have used Verb and TY exclusively now for 2-3 yrs. and now TY only since the MII Verbs are so numerous.

I always see discussions on how superior these discs are on the forums here.

I have burned literally 1000's of discs (always at the highest speed) probably mostly from Best Buy and Staples consisting of mainly Sony and Memorex and can honestly say I have never had any problems.

So what is the deal....are all of my discs suddenly not going to work some day?!!.....

i use a lot of ty's now rather than verbatims also, because of the low quality made in india verbs that started showing up everywhere in the u.s. the mii verbs were making coasters in my pioneer 115. i switched to the "premium" not "value line" tys. burn nicely and play fine. the white hub printables work very well in my canon ip4000 printer.

I have seen what happens with cheap media. In my own collection, I, early on, succumbed to the temptation of lower price and bought some Ridata and black-market Maxell DVD-Rs. For a while they played like any other disc until about two years ago when I began to have trouble playing one or two, then it became about ten. A close inspection of the suspect discs revealed that nearly all had developed very fine hairline cracks in the clear protective layer. Looking at the 2001-2005 vintage REAL Maxell, TDK, Fuji (some of which were really TYs), Verbatim, and a few Sony minus Rs, I found no such problem. Thankfully, I was able to re-record all of the movies that were on the defective discs so nothing (except for $$$ and time) was lost and I still have about sixty more to replace. Until recently, I was having almost perfect results using Verbatim and hate to change but the brand is no longer as it once was and I refuse to willingly support a company that decides to cheapen it's product. I have no idea if he really knows the truth about this but a Best Buy employee told me last Tuesday that soon all of their single layer Verbatim DVDs and the CD media as well would be made in India. While I was there I looked over their stock and found no MIT or MIS minus Rs and only two 50 count spindles of the MIT +Rs which I bought. My original post was to hopefully gain some insight as to any quality difference among the five versions of the TY premium minus Rs. Thanks to everyone who's posted in this thread.

The India Verbatim lines are identical to those in Taiwan. This anti-India stuff is a bit silly. There are no plans to shutter Taiwanese plants that I'm aware of. Best Buy employees are not any kind of reliable source of information on anything whatsoever. They are less than a pawn.

A number of my burners also prefer Verbatim DVD-R over TY DVD-R. I'm fine with both DVD+R flavors.

Well, I have yet to have troubles with anything even media that I know is 5-8 years old weather its Sony, Memorex or other. However, I do value the opinions here and may consider updating/upgrading...I also have secondary backups to a HDD...in some cases multiple HDD's for important stuff so I am safe.

Let's say I want to go one step further and back up on Blu Ray...what are the thoughts on this (besides Sony bashing)?

If the original poster has an ink jet printer that can print directly to discs, nothing beats Taiyo Yuden's Watershield discs. They great when printed to and the quality of the discs is superb.

As far as Verbatim goes, I agree with lordsmurf that I also think the anti-India stuff is a bit silly. If someone wants to pay more, Verbatim's DatLifePlus line of single layer DVDs called "Shiny Silver" at rima.com is still made in Taiwan and I think those are excellent discs. Despite some rumors to the contrary, Verbatim does still make some DVD+R DL discs in Singapore. Their regular line of these discs are made in both Singapore and India and if you mail order, it's luck of the draw as to which you get. However, their DataLifePlus ink jet printable DVD+R DL discs are only made in Singapore, but they are only rated at 2.4X speed and they are expensive as you pay for the printability and the DataLifePlus designation.

It's a translation error. The website or web store you are looking at is wrong if it has these two descriptions.
There are no "data only" or "DVD Video only" DVD blank media.

This THAT'S DVD is actually a Taiyo Yuden DVD in japan.. it their brand.

harky - In the future don't dig up old threads to add to them needlessly. You should have just made a brand new thread. Unless you have critical information providing an answer to an old question (you did not), just leave old threads alone.

There are 2 types of DVD-R: DVD-R for General Media and DVD-R for Authoring. You can use either for making DVD video discs. I have no idea what TY is trying to say with the discs in your picture, but either type should be OK. However, a few burners are known to ONLY be able to burn DVD-R for General Media. It's impossible for me to know if your burner has these restrictions. I can only tell you that if you burn under Apple then you need to use ONLY the DVD-R for General Media discs.

Maybe the TY marketing pack digged too deep and got confused itself with DVD-RAM which is still very popular in Japan?!
