Yes, you can burn double layer discs.

They are very expensive right now though.

Only this new Pioneer does DVD-R DL. And I have not seen any media for DVD-R DL as of yet. It will take some time before prices drop on media.

No. AFAIK the Pioneer 109 is the only one that will ATM, and as TBear mentioned, no DVD-R DL media has been sighted yet. This is just one of many reasons why a lot of people are skeptical of DL burning ATM.
    If in doubt, Google it.

It is quite likely that the new Blue Ray or HD-DVD drives will become available and be price competitive before DVD DL discs come down to a reasonable price level. If that happens then the DL format will effectively be made obsolete before it even gets a significant foothold.

It is predicted that DL discs will come down to around $4ea. by the end of this year, but even at that price level they are still ~8x the cost of DVD-R5. The only use they have is for people who wish to make 1:1 duplicates of retail DVDs and very few people want to do that because retail DVDs contain so much rubbish.

Don't forget that copying commercial DVDs, and DVD-Video in general isn't the only use for DVDs

Some people use DVD-Rs for their captured DV footage, for commercial purposes (weddings, sporting events, etc), or even as data backup solutions, so DL is a handy addition to these people, if they prefer not to use two DVD-5s.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    That always bugs me too.
SOME OF US DO REAL WORK BESIDES "BACKING UP".

Sadly, DL isn't really ready yet (+ or -) for mass use.

The most serious downside to using DL for commercial work is customer complaints when the DVD+R DL almost invariably isn't recognized by their player.
