Newbie here, first post, read lots of threads but still slightly confused
I'm capturing from 8mm for encoding to dvd. Composite to s-video via passive adapter input to wintv pci fm card. xp home, intel 2.8, 1 gig ram, 120g hd, radeon 9800pro video card.
I have used roxio 7 direct capture to mpeg. fast but with noisy strobe like effect with colour bleeding.
after reading posts and searching net the latest i have tried was captured with virtual vcr to avi and encoded with tmpgenc to mpeg2. fast setting gave slightly less noise but still with some colour bleeding. Highest quality noise removal with tmpgenc took 20 hours for a 1 hour recording, not a lot of noise left but still colour bleeding.
Dvd authored using roxio7
I know there is problems separating the colour from composite to s-video, is there anything else you can suggest for a newbie. is there any simple filters i can use that will work.
sorry if this sounds a simple problem but i'm gettig a bit lost with all the information in some of the threads and i'm not sure if it would apply to me.
thanks mikeby

You are probably experiencing severe Y/C separation artifacts due to the use of the passive splitter (the composite to s-video adapter). Run composite directly to the capture card - it probably has a decent comb filter to separate the luma and chroma for digital sampling.
Another possibility is to invest in a used Hi8 or Digital8 camcorder (or VCR) to play back your 8mm tapes with. The luma and chroma are actually separate on the tape itself, but it takes a playback machine with s-video outputs to take advantage of that fact. -
thanks for the feed back
the hauppuage wintv pci fm card i have only has a tuner/aeriel or s-videos input sockets hence my need for the passive adapter
the analogue camcorder i'm using for playback only has composite output, which can be converted to tuner input, but i thought composite converted to s-video was better quality
you mentioned playing the tapes with Hi8 or digital8 camcorder, i'm confused the original was recorded with analogue camcorder, are the tapes the same size and shape, would they be recognised
i've read about a pass through technique using a mini dv, would this work or would the fact that the composite would still have to be converted still result in problems
thanks for the comments

Most Digital8 Sony camcorders (except the entry level models) will play back analog 8mm and Hi8 tapes... an excellent feature. Many of those have a built in DV conversion feature for your analog tapes, as well.
Hi8 camcorders will play back standard 8mm tapes, too. -
thanks for the help gshelley61
sounds very promising
i'll see if i can borrow one for a while
or perhaps buy used
i'll post back to let people know results
