  1. Ok, I have a VCR setup, plugged into my Mini DV Camcorder's Digital pass thru to firewire, and have captured 150 minutes of footage.
I used Win DV to capture, which worked well, however it captured 700+ avi files into the directory I specified. Files sizes range from 10 - 200 megs.
What do i do next ? i have a folder with about 30 GB of DV captured footage, and need to figure out how to compress, and then eventually create a DVD.
Tmpeg only works with 1 avi file, i think.
    Any Suggestions ?

    Thanks in advance.

I think if you had set the Discontinuity Threshold to 0 in the Config window you should only get one .avi file. If it was set to 1 or some other small value you get a file for each time segment on the tape with a time break greater than the selected number in seconds (that is, each time you stopped the camera during recording).
As another item - I had a problem when I started capture with WinDV - the first .avi file had no audio. If I started the DV tape first, then hit Capture, all was OK.
Other than recapturing the video again, maybe another program such as Pinnacle Studio 9 (or other version) might work.

  3. I had the discontinity set to 1. Maybe that was the problem. That was default. I set the other value to max 100000. So do i have to recapture the video again ? Or is there a way to join or process the files with Virtual Dub or something. It's just a lot of data to be working with, it's hard to move multiple 30 GB chunks around, with limited hard drive space. I'd like something that would process the AVI files in a certain order and maybe make an mpeg2 file, that i could work with.
I guess i'll end up deleting the files and recapturing, if there aren't any other suggestions.
    Thanks.

If you had the discontinuity set to 1, you will get a new .avi file for each segment of video that has a time discontinuity greater than 1 sec. Also, make sure that "Every N-th frame" is also set to 1 so no frames in the video are skipped. WinDV doesn't have a lot of info or guides telling you how to use it or what the various settings mean - at least that I could find.
Sorry - can't help you with developing a video by combining the .avi files you already have captured. I have actually only played with WinDV slightly. Mostly use Nero 6 to do my DV capture (if only doing minor editing) or capture in Pinnacle Studio 9 for full DV editing with transitions, fades, menus, etc.

  5. I noticed that WinDV is very modest on CPU usage. I was able to do other minor tasks without any interuption. I also have tried Studio 8, but the capture was very cpu intensive, and if i tried to run anything else, the capture would pause & Freeze... , the resulting capture was not good, a bit jumpy. I wasn't aware that Nero 6 had a DV capture feature. I may look into that. I'll also try the settings you suggested, and see how things work out.
    Thanks.
