  1. My CD with WinDVD that came with my DVD drive has a crack on it and now I can't install WinDVD. What should I get? Thank you. Free preferred, if reliable and without spyware.

This just reminds me of why I laugh every time organisations like the RIAA and MPAA ask us to please not make copies of our own discs.

Having said that much, if you can afford it, it is worth shelling out for PowerDVD XP. I got it bundled with my DVD recorder, and it is definitely the standard by which all other players are judged.

    Download "Best DVD Player v1.0"

Or you could actually put forth some effort and look in the PLAYERS section of TOOLS https://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=11#11 and then read some of the dozens of reviews that are available there.

And THEN if you have a question about one, come make a post about it with specific questions.

That's also what DEMOS and TRIALS are for.

  7. LordSmurf, I did look in tools. I found it confusing at the player section. I wanted some opinions about them.
I almost got MPC, but it said:

"if you have the codecs installed" That is my whole problem. I don't have anything. I found this confusing. I still do as people are recommending it. If I had the codec, I could just use Windows Media Player. At least as I understand it.

In any case, I downloaded MPC and it plays them well. Thanks all.

    Only answer to this qeustion is;

THE ONE THAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU.

    What's the best XXXX?

is ALWAYS so subjective that to answer properly is not sensible.

However contrary to my common sense I will none the less answer....

    PowerDVD

  9. I like WinDVD better than PowerDVD, the controls are laid out better.

PowerDVD is good as it plays un-compliant DVD's rather well

in fact, does the CD not have a serial number on it or something?
Can you access any of the data on the CD?
Maybe you can download WindDVD then register it using that serial?

  11. Okay, I looked at PowerDVD, and it was $49.95. All I want to do is watch a DVD movie on my computer. I really don't even want to do that. I want to preview finished slideshows and video from the DVD. Why would someone pay $50 for this or watch a DVD? I rather save it for a DVD player on my tv. I'm sure I am missing something here, though.
